Baseball Takes Both at Nyack

Goldey-Beacom once again looked for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep and got it, recording a 5-3 victory at Nyack in the opener and a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap in Pomona, NY.

Game one was about another solid pitching effort from Wauseon, OH senior Jake Trejo (3-3), who struck out six over eight innings in yielding just two runs and five hits.  It was the third victory in his last four outings.

GBC in the second inning led 1-0 when sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) scored on a passed ball and made it 2-0 in the fourth when senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) crossed home on a bases-loaded walk.  Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) lined an RBI single in the fifth and fellow junior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) added a run-scoring single in the sixth before getting another in the eighth for a 5-0 margin.

Nyack got three back in the bottom of the ninth on Jeremiah Alonzo's three-run double.  But Carlos Solis came in and got Herman Alvarado to strike out swinging for the final.

Solis continued his torrid stretch with three hits and now is riding a six-game hitting streak, including one hit in the nightcap.  Sophomore Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) also had three hits for the Lightning (8-22, 7-9 CACC).

Austin Fischer recorded two hits for the Warriors (11-20-1, 7-11).

Game two was scoreless going into the seventh and final frame before the Lightning erupted for five runs.  Abdul scored on an error, freshman Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) crushed a three-run double and junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) added an RBI double.

Derwood, MD sophomore Jake Heskett (1-2) went all the way for his first collegiate victory and shutout, striking out four over seven innings and allowing just two hits.

Including Wednesday's sweep of No. 21 Wilmington, this marks the first four-game winning streak both overall and in the conference in team history.

Goldey-Beacom will make up its doubleheader at Wilmington (DE) on Sunday in New Castle.  First pitch is at noon.
