Game Recap: Baseball |

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Stuns No. 21 Wilmington… Twice

Sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) hit a walk-off home run to complete a stunning five-run comeback in a game which junior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) collected four hits in a 12-10 victory for Goldey-Beacom, which completed the sweep of 21st-ranked Wilmington (DE) with a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Down 7-1 entering the last of the eighth inning of game one, the Lightning plated six runs on a trio of long balls for a 7-7 tie.  Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) led off with a home run to left, Solis continued his monster day with a three-run blast and fellow freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) tied it with a two-run shot.

The Wildcats then looked to have things in control with three runs in the ninth for a 10-7 lead.  Kendall Small smacked a leadoff homer, Brooks Ryan had an RBI infield single and Dan Hyatt added a run-scoring groundout.

GBC then had the bases empty with two outs before the fun began.  Junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) lined a double to right center, sophomore Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) got an infield single and senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) walked to load the bases.

Solis then was asked to continue the inning and he did.  His grounder eluded the second baseman for an error and went into right center, allowing all three runners to score for a 10-10 tie.

The deadlock only lasted one batter.  Gillis stepped to the plate and crushed one to left for his second homer of the year and the Lightning's first victory over the Wildcats.

Solis homered twice and fell a triple short of the cycle, ending with four RBI.  La Chorrera, Panama junior Carlos Solis (1-0) came on in the ninth, striking out one over one inning for the win.

Dakota Graham had three hits for Wilmington.  Kyle Maxwell got a tough no-decision, striking out eight over 7 2/3 innings and allowing four runs and seven hits.

Goldey-Beacom in game two opened a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Abdul.  Derek Donastorg tied it for Wilmington in the second on a run-scoring triple.

Solis stayed red hot in the fifth inning, lining a two-run single up the middle for a 3-1 GBC cushion.  Wilmington got one back in the sixth when Quintin Ivy blasted a solo homer to center.

Awtry provided what turned out to be a big insurance run in the sixth with a solo homer to left for a 4-2 margin.  Small blasted a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh, but the Wildcats could get no closer.

Royersford, PA junior Brandon Ferrie (1-1) pitched great for the Lightning (6-22, 5-9 CACC), striking out six and yielding just two runs – one earned – and four hits over 5 2/3 frames.  Sophomore Andrew Emory (Newark, DE) recorded the last four outs for the save.

Hill and Abdul ended with two hits apiece.

Brock Nowell rapped two hits and Noah Latshaw (0-2) struck out four over six innings for the Wildcats (19-11, 8-6).

These teams are scheduled to meet again Friday at Wilson Field in New Castle.
