Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 35 New York Tech, 5-2

Goldey-Beacom put forth one of its best efforts of the season and recorded a huge 5-2 upset of 35th-ranked New York Tech at Springton Club in Media, PA.

Goldey-Beacom entered the match ranked seventh in the East Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and definitely strengthened its case for getting an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. New York Tech (15-4) entered ranked number one in the region.

The Lightning fell behind 1-0 by losing the doubles point. Their only victory in that time came via sophomores Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal), who scored a 6-2 triumph over Ivana Andric and Barbie Quadliardi.

Then the home side got it going in singles. Junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) started it at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Antonella Lopez Alcerro. Junior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) continued it with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Kaitlyn Byrnes.

Lesscher y Post played great all day and continued it with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at first singles over Quagliardi. Freshman Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) recorded a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over Monica Borobia before Zheng notched a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) triumph at second singles over Diana Baumgartnere.

Goldey-Beacom (12-3) now is 4-1 in the spring campaign.

Another tough opponent awaits Friday when Goldey-Beacom hosts 40th-ranked Queens (NY). First serve at Delcastle Tennis Center is at 1:00 pm.
