Baseball Goes Extra to Gain Sweep at Bloomfield

Goldey-Beacom opened its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference interdivision doubleheader at Bloomfield with a 6-1 victory and then needed eight innings to get an 11-8 triumph in the nightcap in Little Falls, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in game one broke the ice in the top of the second inning.  Junior Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) got a one-out single, took second on a sacrifice from sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE), reached third on an infield single from junior Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) and scored on an infield single from freshman Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE).

The Lightning then busted open things with four runs in the sixth for a 5-0 cushion.  Gillis lined a two-run double, Thomas followed with a sacrifice fly and Awtry followed with an RBI single.

Junior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) added an RBI double in the ninth for the final.

Wauseon, OH senior Jake Trejo (2-2) once again pitched great, recording a career-best 10 strikeouts and allowing just one run, eight hits and two walks over eight innings.  Awtry, Thomas, Collins and Roseman all ended with two hits apiece as part of the Lightning's 11.

Justin Sanchez had two hits for the Bears and Anthony Maldonado was tagged for five runs and nine hits over eight innings despite seven strikeouts.

The Lightning in game two put together a sixth-inning rally to forge a 6-6 tie.  Junior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) walked with one out, freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) singled with two outs and junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) tied it with an RBI single that plated Solis.

The eighth inning meant extra innings, which saw the Lightning put up five runs for an 11-6 lead.  Hill provided the highlight with a three-run triple, Gillis had a fielder's choice that scored Hill and sophomore Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk.

GBC (4-14, 3-1 CACC) had to sweat out the last of the frame after the Bears plated two runs, but junior Carlos Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) got the save by inducing Christopher Morillo into a groundout to end it.

Senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) pitched well enough for a win, but took a no-decision after getting nine strikeouts over four innings.  He extends his own school record to 109 career strikeouts.

Hill had three and four RBI with Gillis and Ivan Solis each homering.  Cresco, PA freshman James Balogh (1-0) got the win, firing two scoreless innings.

Kendon Strachan had two hits, a home run and five RBI with Tyree Bradley and Jason Holguin each getting three hits for the Bears (3-19, 3-3).

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday against Jefferson for a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
