Baseball Drops Two at Tusculum

Goldey-Beacom again faced solid competition in Tusculum, but was handed losses by counts of 15-3 and 9-1 in Greeneville, TN.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the third inning of game one forged a 2-2 tie.  Senior Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ) drew a bases-loaded walk to score sophomore Maurice Parson (New Castle, DE) and junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) had an infield single, plating senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ).

After the Pioneers scored twice in the bottom of the frame, the Lightning got one back in the fourth for a 4-3 deficit.  Sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) had a leadoff single, took second on a fielder's choice, reached third on Parson's sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Marquise Wood (Philadelphia, PA).

But Tusculum plated seven runs in the last of the fifth for an 11-3 lead.  Bryson Ford and Daulton Martin each had RBI doubles in the frame with Nate Montgomery and Jaden Steagall each getting run-scoring singles.

Martin, Montgomery and Seth DeHaven all collected three hits for the Pioneers.  Ford, Jarel McDade and Zach Froment all amassed two RBI.

Tusculum in game two struck first in the opening frame, getting a two-out double from Montgomery.  But GBC (1-5) drew even in the top of the second when sophomore Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) lined a two-out triple, scoring freshman Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) for a 1-1 tie.

The Pioneers (10-7), winners of nine straight, broke open things in the fourth inning.  With two outs and a runner on, Trey Hinton and McDade all walked before Garrett Dupuis sent them all home with a grand slam down the left-field line for a 5-1 margin.

Montgomery was a thorn in the Lightning's side, ending the nightcap with three hits and four RBI that included a run-scoring single in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Harbor Jefferson fired six innings for the Pioneers, yielding just one run and four hits.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday to face New Haven for a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
