Jackie Ayers Penalty Kick Lifts Women's Soccer Over Dominican, 5-4, in Double Overtime

Women's Soccer guts a 5-4 win in double overtime against Dominican (NY) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match up in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom and Dominican (NY) both had high intensity from the start. Dominican (NY) pulled away in the 24th minute when Victoria Bonner scored off a corner kick giving the Chargers a 1-0 advantage. 

Goldey-Beacom continued to fight but Dominican (NY) drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick. Abby Montera finished the ball in the bottom left corner to put the Chargers up 2-0.

Goldey-Beacom quickly answered in the 31st minute when sophomore Jackie Ayers (Rising Sun, MD) played a through ball from the left side to junior Line Kristoffersen (Bergen, Norway) who placed the ball in the lower left corner to close the gap to 2-1.

The Lightning didn't stop there. In the 38th minute, Kristoffersen played a through ball from the left side to senior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) who finished the ball in the lower right corner to tie the game 2-2. The game remained tied at the end of the first half. 

At the start of the second half Goldey-Beacom struck first when sophomore Melayna Immediato (Hockessin, DE) played a through ball to Fannon who placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Lightning a 3-2 lead. 

Dominican (NY) then drew another foul in the box for another penalty kick in the 64th minute. Montera took the kick again and scored to tie the game 3-3.

Both teams continued to battle back and forth in the second half. The Lightning received a corner kick in the 74th minute. Immediato crossed the ball into the box for Kristoffersen to head the ball in the top left corner to put the Lightning up 4-3.

Dominican (NY) quickly answered in the 77th minute when Taylor Calero took a shot that was blocked and Megan Geary was there to tap the ball in to tie the game 4-4 to send it to overtime. 

Both teams carried their momentum over into the first overtime but the score remained tied. In the 104th minute, Goldey-Beacom was fouled in the box for a penalty kick. Ayers took the kick for the Lightning and placed the ball in the back of the net to win the game 5-4. 

Ayers had six shots, Fannon and Kiera Young (Havre de Grace, MD) both had four shots each for Goldey-Beacom. Noel Talbot (Marriottsville, MD) had three saves for the Lightning. 

Geary had five shots, Calero had three shots, Montera and Bonner both had two shots each for Dominican (NY). Jasmine Pesante had five saves for the Chargers. 

Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Wednesday October 9 against Georgian Court at 3pm in Lakewood, NJ.
