Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sergi Varona Nets Both Goals in Men’s Soccer’s Thrilling 2-1 Triumph at Concordia (NY)

Junior Sergi Varona (Barcelona, Spain) scored both goals and Goldey-Beacom held on from there for a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Concordia (NY) in Bronxville, NY.

Goldey-Beacom trailed 1-0 before tying things in the 58th minute on a great corner kick.  Junior Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia) took it from the left side and fed the ball to Varona, who put a great one touch on it and found the back of the net.

Varona kept his scoring prowess going in the 66th minute, giving the Lightning a 2-1 cushion.  Sophomore Alejandro Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) had the ball on the right and fed a perfect cross to Varona, who tapped it home for his fourth goal of the season and first career brace.

Goldey-Beacom in the second half yielded just four shots with none on frame for its eighth victory in the last nine outings.  The Lightning (10-4, 7-1 CACC), who have won three of their last four meetings with the Clippers, remain in first place in the CACC.

Varona closed with four shots and junior Cole Lewis (Middletown, DE), the reigning CACC Goalkeeper of the Week, made five saves.

Nemanja Zivanovic scored as he and Dennis Limani each had five shots for the Clippers (6-5, 5-3).  Mikael Varin came up with three saves.

This was the Lightning's school-record sixth road victory of the year.  The team had five such wins four times, most recently in 2017.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday plays its third game in six days, visiting Jefferson for a 3:00 pm start in East Falls.
