Goldey-Beacom cross country/track & field coach Andrew Shearer is teaming with his daughter, Aubrey, to hold an endurance run toward raising awareness about mental illness and teen suicide.

The two were featured in an article in The News Journal that can be viewed by clicking here.

Father and daughter will participate in "One Mile an Hour" from June 15-16 at the Appoquinimink High School Field House in Middletown, running one mile at the top of each hour from 7:00 pm Friday through 6:00 pm Saturday.  Those interested in participating and/or those wishing to make a donation can do so by clicking here.

As detailed in the article, a friend of Aubrey's who attended the University of Delaware committed suicide in December.  Aubrey has taken it upon herself to take in donations and sell t-shirts, with all of the proceeds going to The Mental Health Association of Delaware and Rebuilding Warriors.

The article also includes facts regarding teen suicide and mental illness as well as further information regarding the event.

Shearer is going into his third season leading the cross country programs and begins the task guiding the track & field teams, who will have their first meet in the spring of 2019.

One of the department's most liked people, his affable personality and ability to work great with everyone has permeated throughout his programs.  This played a huge role in the men's cross country unit capturing the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Sportsmanship Award.

Shearer spent three seasons as head coach at Middletown High School, leading the team workouts in addition to interaction with both the Delaware state association and the school's athletic department.  He also was an assistant coach at Red Lion Christian Academy from 2010-11, leading all working and individual training.

Shearer also serves as coach for the Middletown Athletic Club's Couch to 5K Program, is an advisor for the Healthy Kids Running Series in Middletown and is both secretary and treasurer of the Middletown Athletic Club.  He has been Level I certified in coaching by the U.S. Track & Field Association since 2013.

Goldey-Beacom's cross country season begins August 31 at the Panther Invitational in Bethpage, NY.
