Winding down to a nail-biting finish for the final tournament spots in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division, Goldey-Beacom Baseball split with Chestnut Hill, 5-1 and 4-11 in Philadelphia, PA.
Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, Goldey-Beacom started to answer the call when sophomore Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) smacked an RBI double to left center scoring senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI).
In the following inning, the Lightning smelled blood rounding off four runs. The go-ahead run came off a two-run RBI Double from Raul Perez-Duran (senior from Trenton, NJ) bringing home Keegan Marsden (senior from Stratford, ON) and Justin Hill (sophomore from Seaford, DE) on the play, increasing the lead to 3-1.
Marsden went 2-for-3 from the plate recording the only multi-hit game for a member of the Lightning.
Mitch Guerrieri (4-4), the freshman from Greentown, PA, threw like a machine. He pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run on six hits.
Thomas Hughes (0-1) received the loss for the Griffins.
Chestnut Hill (17-19, 13-13 CACC) held the lead for the entirety of game two.
The Lightning made a final push in the fifth inning with a two-run homer from Jason Rowe (three RBI), the senior from West Hills, CA, decreasing the Griffins lead to 5-4.
However, the Griffins bats became too much for the Lightning to control. John Contoudis and Demetrius Isaac both tallied multi-RBI games. Sam Barletta (3-for-3, two runs) and Matthew Owens (2-for-3) also provided solid offense for Chestnut Hill.
Billy Bethel (5-2) earned the win for the Griffins pitching seven innings and striking out nine batters while allowing two earned runs.
Trevor Jump (4-4), the freshman from Wilmington, DE, took the loss on the mound.
Goldey-Beacom (16-26-1, 14-14 CACC) returns to the diamond for a CACC doubleheader at Jefferson on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Lightning are in third place of the CACC South and finishing in the top four will secure a tournament spot.
