Record Day for Baseball in Doubleheader Split vs. Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom set two single-game records in posting an 8-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Dominican (NY) in game one before a 9-7 loss in the nightcap at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Game one belonged to junior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ), who notched 14 strikeouts to break the previous mark set when freshman Trevor Jump (Wilmington, DE) had 11 against Post on April 14.  Abdul (2-4) permitted just one run, one hit and one walk over eight innings in his masterpiece.

The spotlight also was on senior Raul Perez-Duran (Trenton, NJ), who had five stolen bases in the opener to break his own record of three accomplished in consecutive games against University of the Sciences on April 13 and Post the next day.  Duran went 4-for-5 in each contest, combining for three doubles and three RBI.

GBC took the lead for good with five runs in the last of the fifth for a 6-1 lead.  Perez-Duran had an RBI double in the frame and senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI) added an RBI single.

Smith added a two-run single in the seventh to close with three hits as part of his three-hit day.

Nathanial Popiel (1-5) gave up six runs – three earned – and eight hits with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 frames for the Chargers.

Game two was level at five before Dominican took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-5 margin.  Brett Karcher-Bowen had an RBI single and Joseph Libio added a run-scoring double.

Down 9-5 entering the eighth, the Lightning got a solo home run from sophomore Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) in the frame and Perez-Duran added an RBI double in the ninth.  But the home side could get no closer.

Roseman and senior Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) had two hits apiece for GBC.  Union, NJ freshman Nick Miller (0-1) gave up two runs and two hits over an inning.

Nicholas Galese (3-1) got the win despite yielding five runs and seven hits over six innings.  Jaden Diaz-Lambert allowed two runs and five hits over the final three innings for his first save of the year.

Goldey-Beacom (15-25-1, 13-13 CACC) holds a slim lead over Jefferson (11-12) for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot from the South Division.  Those schools battle in a doubleheader next Friday.

Before that, Goldey-Beacom visits third-place Chestnut Hill (12-10) on Tuesday for a noon doubleheader in Norristown, PA.
