Baseball Gains a Split at University of the Sciences



Goldey-Beacom rolled to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at University of the Sciences after a tough 11-10 loss at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, PA.
 
GBC in game two scored three times in the top of the second for a 5-1 lead, keyed by a two-run homer from sophomore Brandon Hanson (Bayonne, NJ).  The Lightning then got three more runs in the third for an 8-1 cushion, highlighted by an RBI single from Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) and a run-scoring single from fellow senior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON).
 
The Lightning got two more in the fifth for a 10-1 game with Marsden getting an RBI single and junior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) drawing a bases-loaded walk for the final.
 
Greentown, PA freshman Mitch Guerrieri (3-3) enjoyed another solid outings, striking out four over seven innings in allowing just a run and four hits.  Marsden closed with three hits and four RBI, Rowe had three hits with Abdul getting two hits and two RBI.
 
Austin Blumetti (0-1) was tagged for eight runs – five earned – and five hits over 2 1/3 innings for the Devils. 
 
USciences in game one scored five times in the bottom of the eighth for the final, getting a two-run single from Ryan Scholey for the decider.
 
Marsden collected three RBI, falling a triple short of the cycle, and Hanson notched a career-best four hits for the Lightning (12-20-1, 10-8).  Abdul notched a career-high 10 strikeouts over seven innings for the no-decision.
 
Collin Fabio rapped three hits and Mack Gill (1-0) got the win, striking out six and yielding two runs and two hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Devils (6-19, 3-11).  John McCrane tossed a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.
 
Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday to visit Post for a noon doubleheader in Waterbury, CT.
