Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against University of the Sciences

On a cold and rainy day at Doyle Field, Goldey-Beacom Baseball managed to split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against University of the Sciences by winning game one 7-3 and losing game two 12-2 at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

For the majority of game one, University of the Sciences held the lead until GBC struck with six runs in the eight inning. With runners on second and third base, the tying run came on a wild pitch where Ty Williams (senior from Newark, Del.) scored at home. During the same play, the Devils pitcher, John McCrane, made an errant throw on the play from home plate to third base as Justin Hill (sophomore from Seaford, Del.) slid into third base after starting on first base. Hill eventually scored on the play putting the Lightning up 4-3.

The Lightning followed up with three more runs in the inning thanks to Cole Collins (sophomore from Laurel, Del.) smacking a two-run single down the right field line, and a double steal play where Raul Perez-Duran (senior from Trenton, N.J.) scored.

Edwin Lee, the senior from La Plata, Md., showed a solid hitting performance going 2-for-3 from the plate and scoring two runs.

Jake Heskett (freshman from Derwood, Md.) gave a solid start on the mound pitching seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Tre Wilson (1-0), the junior from Lancaster, Pa., took the mound in the eighth inning and got the win, allowing no hits with no runs.

John McCrane (1-2) received the loss for the Devils.

In game two, the Devils (4-9, 1-1 CACC) stomped their foot on the gas pedal and never looked back. Nate Steele started their run in the fourth inning with a two-run double down the left field line. University of the Sciences added two more runs for the remainder of the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth inning.

The Devils received contributions from everyone in the lineup with Frank D'Alessandro leading the way going 2-for-4 from the plate and batting in three runs.

Hiro Mizutani (2-0) pitched the first six innings while allowing one earned run and striking out five batters for the Devils.

Perez-Duran (0-1) lost on the mound despite three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

Goldey-Beacom (5-15-1, 3-3) play its next game at Doyle Field against Bloomfield. The CACC doubleheader will take place on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
