No. 43 Women’s Tennis Back on Winning Track With Win at Slippery Rock

No. 43 Goldey-Beacom survived a battle against regionally-ranked Slippery Rock and began a new winning streak with a 7-2 victory in Slippery Rock, PA.

Goldey-Beacom (13-1) opened things by winning two of the three doubles rubbers. Sophomore Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) posted an 8-3 victory at number two doubles over Viola Lugmayr and Olivia Warner. Junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) and sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) followed with an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles vs. Lauren Fadden and Amy Varckette.

The singles followed and it was the Lightning, ranked second in the East Region, who won three of them in straight sets. Freshman Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) got a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at first singles over Gahan, Garcia Valle posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles vs. Allie Welch and Hortelano Pey amassed a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at sixth singles over Varckette.

That alone was enough to secure the win, but the Lightning then battled for two victories that went to match tiebreaks. Sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) got a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) win at third singles over Warner and Regner recorded a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory at No. 4 singles vs. Fadden.

The Lightning had a season-opening 12-match winning streak before it loss Friday at Indiana (PA), ranked first in the Atlantic Region. Slippery Rock (6-7) is ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region.

Goldey-Beacom is off until April 2, when it hosts West Chester for a 3:30 pm match.
