Volleyball Grinds its Way to 3-1 Victory Over Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom held off a challenge from the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions and battled its way to a 3-1 triumph (25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 30-28) over Caldwell at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC in the first set gained a 13-12 kills advantage with Caldwell only getting a .085 hitting percentage.  The Lightning in the second had 12 kills and just four errors with the Cougars only getting a .100 percentage.

The crazy fourth set saw Caldwell have a set point at 24-23, but freshman Shayla Boyce (Somerdale, NJ) avoided a fifth set with a kill.  The Cougars again looked to level the match with a 26-25 lead, but Boyce again was on the spot with a kill and an evened set.

Sophomore Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) then took matters into her own hands.  She recorded a kill to give the Lightning a 29-28 lead and then served an ace to end the almost two-hour marathon.

Boyce was unstoppable in the fourth set with 11 kills over 22 attacks for a .364 hitting percentage.  This helped the Lightning close with 20 kills and a .280 percentage in the set with the Cougars hitting just .149.

Boyce pounded a season-best 25 kills and also had a .276 percentage for the Lightning (4-15, 1-9 CACC).  Przywara amassed 18 kills and 18 digs, senior Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) dished 30 assists, freshman Autumn Spendlove (Las Vegas, NV) had 19 and 11 digs with sophomore Courtney Bublitz (North East, MD) getting a career-high 19 digs.

Elise Smith recorded 26 kills, Samantha Ashton dished 50 assists, Humiko Stormer had 26 digs digs and Alejandra Leal Montes added 15 for the Cougars (7-14, 6-5).

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday heads to East Falls to battle Jefferson.  Game time is 6:00 pm.
