Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Garners 5-2 Win Over Bloomsburg

Goldey-Beacom played solidly in its home debut and left Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE with a hard-fought victory over Bloomsburg that was closer than the 5-2 final indicated.

Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) rebounded a shot from fellow senior Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany) and scored in the fourth minute to give GBC a 1-0 lead.  Bloomsburg leveled things in the 28th minute with Austin Transue knocking in a pass from Carter Luckenbaugh.

The Lightning (1-1) then battled to earn a penalty kick with just five seconds left in the first half and senior Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) was called on from the spot for the second time in his career.  Just like his first opportunity in 2014, he buried it for a 2-1 lead.

Sanchez' 12th career goal moves him into sole possession of 10th place in school history.

The Huskies (0-2) battled throughout the second half and forged a 2-2 tie in the 65th minute when Brett Milden won the ball in a scramble and tallied.

GBC finally took the lead for good in the 68th minute when freshman Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) picked up a loose ball and blasted one home from 15 yards just inside the right post.

Bloomsburg played the final 7 1/2 minutes with just 10 men due to a red card and GBC capitalized, getting goals from juniors Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and Callum Flynn (Guildford, England) for the final.

Aghrim attempted five shots, Zvinchuk had four and junior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) amassed three saves for the Lightning, who closed with a 20-8 shots edge.

Taylor Lesage closed with three saves over 84 1/2 minutes for the Huskies.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against Pittsburgh-Johnstown, starting at 4:00 pm.
