Alanna Speaks’ 90th-Minute Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Felician

Freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE) did it again, this time scoring with 57 seconds left to help Goldey-Beacom thwart a serious challenge from Felician for a big 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory in Lyndhurst, NJ.

GBC (5-0-1, 4-0 CACC) owned an 18-7 shots edge with 10 on frame, but held off a major challenge to continue its best start in school history and establish a new best opening in league play.  The 2006 squad had opened the campaign 3-0 in conference play.

The Lightning also halted a 10-game winless streak against the Golden Falcons (0-7-3) and the teams finally ended in regulation after the last four encounters went to extra time.

Speaks again kept finding the back of the net, first in the 31st minute to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.  She took a pass from junior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) and put an eight-yard shot low and into the frame.

Felician tied things in the 62nd minute when Danielle Stoll faced a one-on-one battle near the goal and won it for a 1-1 tie.

GBC held a 10-4 shots edge in the second half, but had to wait until the dying seconds for the go-ahead marker.  Senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) continued her great playmaking and lifted a pass from the right to Speaks, who headed it home for her league-leading sixth goal of the year.

All of Speaks' goals have come in the last three matches and she has two braces this season.  To put her start in perspective, she is two goals off the school's single-season top 10 list.

Runciman now has 73 career points, moving her into sole possession of third place in school history.  Former teammate Alex Smith (2011-14) is just one point in front of her.

Runciman ended with five shots and junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) made two saves for GBC.

Stoll attempted four shots and Jamie Kazenmayer made eight saves for Felician (1-4-1, 1-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Wilmington (DE) for a 4:00 pm contest in Newark.
