Women’s Tennis Opens Title Defense With 8-1 Win over USciences

Goldey-Beacom's began the quest for a second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title by rolling to an 8-1 victory over University of the Sciences at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

The squad's opened the rematch of last year's conference semifinals with GBC grabbing all three doubles matches. Freshmen Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) each made their Lightning debuts by helping first doubles to an 8-2 win over Karla Miletic and Abbygail Gamarnik. Sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) notched an 8-1 triumph over Elkanah Linder and Danielle Paran at second doubles with sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Edcador) posting an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles vs. Gabrielle Soriano and Han Le.

Zheng in her first singles match recorded a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at number two over Linder, Hortelano Pey notched a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles over Gamarnik and Regner won her first single match, 6-1, 6-1 at number four over Paran. Garcia Valle recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over Julia James with sophomore Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) getting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jillyan Serrano at number six.

Lesscher y Post played great in her first singles match against Miletic, last season's CACC Player and Rookie of the Year. The rubber ended in a match tiebreak with Miletic notching a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win for the Devils (1-1, 0-1 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (1-0, 1-0) on Thursday visits Gwynedd Mercy for a 4:30 pm contest in Gwynedd Valley, PA.
