Baseball Drops Finale at Barton

An exciting weekend of baseball for Goldey-Beacom ended with the culmination of its first road trip, a tough 11-8 loss at Barton in Wilson, NC.

Confidence from the getting past the day-one jitters carried into day two, when Goldey-Beacom grabbed its first lead in team history.  Junior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) in the top of the first was hit by a pitch, took second when sophomore Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) was plunked, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE).

The Bulldogs scored four times in the last of the frame, aided by a two run single from Chase Riker.

Down 5-1 in the third, the Lightning plated three runs for a one-run deficit.  Thomas again proved his worth with a two-run double and junior Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) added an RBI single.

It was 6-4 in the sixth when GBC (0-3) scored three times for a one-run lead.  Junior Raul Perez-Duran (Trenton, NJ) lined an RBI double to left and Abdul singled up the middle to plate two runs.

But Barton (13-0) plated five runs in the seventh for an 11-7 margin.  Shawn Montren tied it on an RBI double and Tyler Garrett provided the lead with his own run-scoring double.

Thomas had three hits and three RBI, closing the weekend going 6-for-10 with a double and four RBI over three games.  Smyrna, DE freshman John Barkley Jr. (0-1) allowed five runs – two earned – and five hits over an inning and freshman Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA) gave up just one earned run over five frames.

Riker and Hunter Pearre had three hits apiece and Justin Evans (1-0) struck out five over two relief innings for Barton.  Troy Maslowski fired a scoreless ninth for the save.

Goldey-Beacom is in action for a four-game series at Newberry, which begins Friday at 5:00 pm in Newberry, SC.
