Men’s Soccer Upends No. 10 Merrimack in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament



History.  Goldey-Beacom's men's soccer team has made it all year and it made even more to start the NCAA Tournament.
 
Sophomore Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) scored late in the first half and Goldey-Beacom put down the clamps thereafter for a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Merrimack in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Garden City, NY.
 
The squad (17-4-1) becomes the first men's team in school history to win a head-to-head NCAA Tournament contest and also broke the team record for most victories in a season, set in 1997 and equaled in 2002.  The 2006 men's golf squad was the first at GBC to win an NCAA event by taking the East Regional and the women's tennis teams of 2015 and 2017 were the only ones with a head-to-head NCAA victory entering tonight.
 
GBC, seeded sixth in the East Region, is off to the second round against eight-ranked and second-seeded Adelphi.  The match on the Panthers' campus is Saturday at 7:00 pm.
 
Goldey-Beacom spent most of the first half breaking down Merrimack's defense, which entering the match had been breached for just 12 goals on the year.  The speed of junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) helped create many chances, but the Lightning just could not convert.
 
It took a long pass from do-it-all senior midfielder Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) in the 38th minute to put GBC ahead.  Silvestre got the ball back from freshman Nicholas Ladeira (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sent it to Jaramillo, who chipped it home over goalkeeper Lucas Rezende for a 1-0 cushion.
 
It was Jaramillo's fourth goal of the season and sixth career.  It also was Silvestre's 12th career assist, moving him into 10th place in school history.
 
While the stats list the shots as 15-12 in favor of Merrimack, the number three seed did not have that many opportunities as the disciplined midfield and defense of Goldey-Beacom shut down any quality chance.
 
Junior goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) extended his own school record with his 12th career shutout and his seventh on the season matched the number saves he had in the match.  It was not the only good news of the day as he, Aghrim and senior defender Cameron Wilkinson (Terrigal, Australia) learned they were voted CoSIDA Academic All-District.
 
Jaramillo recorded three shots with Silvestre getting two.  Michael Dushman had three shots for the Warriors (16-3-2).
