Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls in OT to No. 15 Adelphi in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

Goldey-Beacom left everything on the field with a berth in the NCAA Tournament's "Sweet 16" on the line, but gave up a goal late in regulation and 7:29 into the second overtime for a beyond heartbreaking 2-1 second-round loss to 15th-ranked Adelphi in Garden City, NY.

The Lightning's defense and midfield played one of their finest games of this incredible and historic season.  The squad had gotten this far by winning its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title and upending 10th-ranked Merrimack, 1-0, on Thursday to become the College's first men's team to win a head-to-head NCAA Tournament game in any sport.

What will be remembered from this season not only is this hard-fought contest, but the will and determination put forth by all that includes 10 seniors, four first team all-conference performers, the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, three CoSIDA Academic All-District performers and a coaching staff that helped mold this group into one many can be proud of.

GBC (17-5-1, 9-2-1 CACC) broke the school record for most victories overall and in conference before playing on a national stage for the first time since competing in the 2002 NAIA National Tournament.  The Lightning also had a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) and a four-game shutout streak that both are school records.

Goldey-Beacom shook off Adelphi's early momentum and for the 16th time this season scored the first goal of the game.  Senior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) put a long ball through the middle of the field to junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany), who in the 21st minute placed it past goalkeeper Raymond Leto inside the bottom left corner for his 11th goal of the season.

It also is Aghrim's 17th career goal, putting him sixth in school history.  Silvestre's 14th career assist has him seventh in team annals.

Andre De Giorgi for the Panthers was two minutes away from having a lifetime's worth of nightmares after his shot in the 52st minute was stopped by senior defender Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) and two were halted by junior goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa), one in the 79th minute and one seven minutes later.

The Lightning's defense was on lockdown, but De Giorgi broke their hearts with 1:56 left in regulation.  He received a slide pass in the box from Taylor Kaczynski and buried it for his 12th goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.

Extra time did not produce a great deal of chances on either side.  But Adelphi thought a golden chance slipped away in the 106th minute when Toni Soler rang one off the crossbar and the ball harmlessly fluttered away.

However, the Panthers got the winner in the 108th minute.  De Giorgi got the ball near the six-yard box and put it at the top of the 18-yard stripe for Joseph Sanchez, who put a low shot just inside the left post for his third goal of the season.

Bismilla, a two-time first team all-league pick in addition to being the league's Goalkeeper of the Year and an Academic All-District selection, could not have played better with six saves as he once again served as one of the maestros for what was an outstanding defense.

De Giorgi had nine shots with Sanchez getting six for the Panthers (14-2-2).
