CHAMPIONS: Men’s Soccer Captures CACC Title With OT Win vs. Jefferson

It only was appropriate freshman Nicholas Ladeira (Johannesburg, South Africa) was on the spot for the game-winning goal.  It only was appropriate junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) was there for the history-making assist.

Ladeira scored his second overtime goal in as many games, converting Aghrim's feed 8:58 into extra time to give Goldey-Beacom a thrilling 2-1 victory over Jefferson in Lakewood, NJ and the College's second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title.

The Lightning (16-4-1, 9-2-1 CACC) are off to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history and will know their opponent during the selection show, which takes place Monday at 6:30 pm on NCAA.com.  The first-round match either will take place November 9 or 10 at a site to be determined.

It will not be the program's first appearance on the national stage as it went to the NAIA National Tournament in 2002, its last year in the organization.  The following year, GBC won its first CACC crown and played in the ECAC final.

This also marks the 11th CACC title for the College and second this academic year with the women's tennis team upending Wilmington (DE), 5-3, on October 22.

Goldey-Beacom also tied the school record for most wins in a season, established in 1997 and duplicated in 2002.

Ladeira, who scored the overtime goal in Friday's 2-1 semifinal triumph over Post, once again delivered the heroics.  The Tournament's Most Outstanding Player took a crossing pass from Aghrim and put a back heel on the ball into the net for his eighth goal of the year and team-leading fourth game-winning tally.

Aghrim is not to be lost in any of this as his 15th assist of the season ties the school record set by Matt DiGiacobbe in 2003.  His 24 career assists puts him one back of GBC Athletics Hall of Famer Jason McCloskey (2000-03) for second in team annals.

Jefferson (15-5-1) took the lead in the 25th minute thanks to a set piece.  Seiji Rose put a free kick near the cage and Pedro Noto headed it home for a 1-0 lead.

Goldey-Beacom tied the match on a great corner kick in the 31st minute.  Sophomore Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) had the honor from the right side and freshman Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia) headed it home for his fifth goal of the season.

In addition to Ladeira, Bismilla, Aghrim, senior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) and sophomore Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) were picked to the all-tournament team.
