Men’s Soccer Upends Nyack, 4-2, in CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom netted the first three goals, gave up the next two and survived a barrage at the end for a 4-2 victory over Nyack in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The second-seeded Lightning (14-4-1) notched their first conference tournament win since capturing the 2003 CACC crown and will face No. 6 Post on Friday at 1:30 pm on the campus of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom entered the tournament with its highest seed since it also was the second seed, back in 2001.

The Lightning controlled play through most of the first half and struggled to get a goal.  That was until Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) fed a corner kick in the box to fellow senior Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain), who headed it home for his first goal of the season and fourth career.  This gave GBC a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Goldey-Beacom made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute thanks to junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany), who today was picked first team All-CACC for a second straight year.  He got a great ball from freshman Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) and put a 10-yard shot inside the left post and in for his 10th goal of the year and 16th career.

Aghrim now is tied with senior Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) and Andre Jank (2010-13) for sixth place on the school's career goals list.

Just under a minute later, Aghrim was on the giving end to make it 3-0.  He fed a great pass to Silvestre, also picked first team all-league, from 10 yards and the latter banged one in off the left post for his sixth goal of the season and 13th career.

Nyack in the 68th minute got on the board when Alex Garcia fired home a 20-yard shot just inside the right post to make it 3-1.  The Warriors kept up the pressure and were rewarded three minutes later with Francois Legoedec scoring through a crowd from 20 yards off Finn Reese's assist for a one-goal game.

Now things were getting serious and junior goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) was called upon for the Lightning.  The CACC Goalkeeper of the Year and two-time first team all-league pick saved a great header from Reese in the 84th minute and then denied Storm Glautier's long shot in the 85th minute.

Nyack kept up the pressure by pulling the goalkeeper, but Silvestre got the ball and fed Varela for an open-net tally with 14 seconds remaining for the final.

Aghrim attempted five shots and Bismilla made six saves for the Lightning, who are 10-1-1 in their last 12 games that includes a school-record 10-game unbeaten streak and a four-game shutout streak.

Garcia, Legoedec and Reese all attempted three shots and Alvaro Magel came up with six saves for the Warriors (7-10-1).
