Women’s Soccer Left Heartbroken With Double OT Loss to Holy Family



Goldey-Beacom rallied to tie and then thought it had the game won, only to be dealt a crushing 2-1, double-overtime loss by Holy Family in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.
 
The first half was a continuous battle for momentum with the game scoreless and the Tigers holding a mere 6-5 shots edge.
 
But Holy Family struck first in the 55th minute.  Brianna Rock won a one-on-one battle near midfield, went directly toward the cage and put a shot inside the right post.
 
The Lightning got even in the 59th minute.  Freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE) was taken down in the box and a penalty kick was awarded.  Senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) shockingly was called upon and she buried it, improving to 4-for-4 on penalties this season and 8-for-9 for her career.
 
GBC thought it had won the game in the first overtime when senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) put home a rebound of Speaks' saved shot, but the former was called for offside and the match continued.
 
It would go on until 1:54 elapsed in the second extra period, when Rock netted her team-leading 14th goal of the year.  Hannah Derby fed a great pass down the right sideline and Rock put it just under the cross bar for the Lightning's first home loss of the year on the new Bermuda Grass (7-1) and first home setback combined between the men's and women's outfits (15-1).
 
It was only appropriate a tightly contested match would end with each team level in shots at 16.  Rock had seven for the Tigers and Speaks recorded four for the Lightning.
 
Emily Camp had a solid performance for Holy Family with seven saves, as did junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) for Goldey-Beacom with four.
 
GBC (10-4-1, 8-3 CACC) now sits tied for third with Wilmington (8-2) in the conference with 24 points with the latter having a game in hand.  Both each have a three-point lead over Jefferson (7-3), which has two games left.
 
Holy Family (12-4, 9-1) is second in the league behind Georgian Court (10-0) and two meet next Tuesday in Philadelphia.
 
Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday for a doubleheader with the men's squad at Caldwell, the final CACC regular-season contest for both this year.  Please note the men's contest is first at 11:00 am and the women follow at 1:30 pm.
