Volleyball Posts 3-1 Triumph Over Cheyney



Goldey-Beacom righted itself over the final three sets and remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-7) over Cheyney at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning leveled the match in the second set with 15 kills, a .406 hitting percentage and six aces.  Senior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE) had six kills and a .500 percentage in the set with sophomore Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) amassing nine assists.
 
The third set was even more of a mismatch with GBC owning a 16-5 kills edge with no errors and a .516 percentage.  McCarthy and freshman Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) notched five kills apiece and Florence totaled 11 assists for GBC (2-0), off to its best start since opening 3-0 in 2008.
 
The fourth set featured an almost-unheard-of 14-0 run that took the Lightning from a 6-3 lead to an insurmountable 20-3 cushion.  The home side only needed eight kills and just one error in the set versus three kills and eight errors for the Wolves.
 
McCarthy closed with 17 kills, one off her career best, nine digs and a .316 hitting percentage with Przywara getting 11 kills and 11 digs for her first collegiate double-double.  Florence closed with 35 assists, freshman Makinsie Balderson (Fairfax, VA) notched a match-high 16 digs with Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) and fellow junior Jada Canteen (Newark, DE) totaling seven kills.
 
Virshawna Campbell had 11 kills and 14 digs, Akia Harris notched 15 digs, Chelsea Hutson amassed 14 and Mary Flores closed with 12 for Cheyney (0-3).
 
Goldey-Beacom is off until next Friday, when it visits Holy Family for its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener.  Match time is 6:00 pm.
