Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sophie Woods’ Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to Double OT Win at Chowan

Sophomore Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) took a pass from freshman Kiera Young (Aberdeen, MD) in the 104th minute and scored in helping Goldey-Beacom to a 2-1 victory at Chowan in Murfreesboro, NC.

The goal was worth the wait as the match's tap was delayed 80 minutes by rain.  When the curtain lowered 3:06 into the second overtime, Woods had her first goal for GBC and Young had her first collegiate point for their squad's first 2-0 start since 2002.

The win was well deserved, especially since GBC held a 26-3 shots edge that included 20-0 after halftime.  The Lightning also had a 12-1 advantage in shots on cage.

But it was Chowan who had the upper hand early, getting a penalty-kick goal from Kimberly Surio for a 1-0 contest.  Junior Natalie Waltz (Leola, PA) changed that in the 37th minute when she scored off a breakaway for her first collegiate goal.

Woods and senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) each had four shots for the Lightning and senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) played all 103 minutes without having to make a save.

Olivia Borer came up with 10 saves for Chowan (1-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Nyack in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game starts at noon, which precedes the men's 2:30 pm contest.
