Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Stays Perfect With 2-1 Victory at Nyack

Sophomore Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) and senior Valarie Orth (Pittsgrove, NJ) each scored first half goals, leading Goldey-Beacom to its best start in program history with a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Nyack in Nyack, NY.

Woods, the hero of Wednesday's double-overtime victory at Chowan, got on the board for the Lightning in the 14th minute.  Nyack goalkeeper Julianna Kranes dropped the ball and Woods was there to pounce on and bury the loose change for her second goal of the season.

Orth came on as a substitute in the 19th minute and then found pay dirt nine minutes later.  A pass from Kranes went awry and Orth was there to intercept and bury a shot inside the bottom-right corner for her second career goal and a 2-0 GBC cushion.

The Lightning owned an 8-5 shots edge in the first half and senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) made three saves.

Nyack got one back in the 77th minute when Brianna Sparrow headed in a free kick from Lauren Rygus, making it 2-1.

The Lightning (3-0, 1-0 CACC) buckled down at that point and did not allow another shot the remainder of the match for their third straight victory over the Warriors.  They have outscored their opponents 7-2 this season and have accrued a 62-18 shots advantage.

GBC previously had gone 2-0-1 to open the 2002 campaign.

Woods ended with three shots to help the Lightning gain an 11-10 edge and Aguirre closed with four saves.

Vanessa Sefriou totaled three shots and Kranes came up with four saves for Nyack (0-3, 0-1).

Goldey-Beacom next week plays three home games, starting Tuesday against Queens (NY) at 3:30 pm.
