Goldey-Beacom began its spring season earlier than expected by competing Sunday on day one of the Hornet Tennis Classic against Delaware State and Longwood, both Division I schools.

Sunday featured the singles portion of the single-elimination tournament with 20 individuals competing in Lewes, DE.  Monday will have the doubles teams taking part.

Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands), the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, was handed a 6-0 first-round loss by Longwood's Mason Thomas and junior Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) fell 7-6 (8-6) in the first round to Longwood's Paloma Alatorre.

Junior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) got a bye into the round of 16, but was dealt a 6-1 loss by Longwood's Isis Gill-Reid.  Freshman Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) also competed in the last 16, falling 6-1 to Longwood's Anna Pelak.

Thomas won five matches to take the crown, 6-2 over Pelak.
