Women’s Soccer Clinches Home Quarterfinal With 2-1 Win Over Wilmington

Seniors Lauren DeVault (Williamstown, NJ) and Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) each scored first-half goals and Goldey-Beacom held on for a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Wilmington (DE) in New Castle.

The win clinches a home quarterfinal game in the CACC Tournament for the first time since 2005.  GBC (12-4-1, 8-3-1 CACC) will be the number three seed and host sixth-seeded Holy Family next Monday at 2:00 pm at a site to be determined.

GBC also tied the school record for most CACC wins, also accomplished in 2001 and 2002.

Goldey-Beacom came out as the more aggressive team and was rewarded when sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.  Junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) had her attempt saved by Kierstyn Williams, but DeVault banged home the rebound for her second career goal and a 1-0 lead.

The Lightning had another great chance in the 33rd minute with a free kick from roughly 30 yards.  Cordo was asked to do the honors and she deposited it inside the top right corner for her four tally of the season and 12th career.

Wilmington was given new life in the 84th minute when Riley Thompson was held in the box, drawing a penalty kick.  Melissa Gall made it count for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 contest.

All were holding their breath seconds later when Rebecca Dolhansky rocketed a shot from just outside the box, but senior goalkeeper Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) was there for a diving save to preserve the win.

Aguirre closed with three saves.

Gabrielle Perry attempted three shots and Williams totaled three saves for the Wildcats (10-7, 8-4), who will be the fifth seed for the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom ends its regular season Saturday at Pittsburgh-Johnstown in a noon match.
