Men’s Soccer Dealt Stunning 3-2 Loss at Holy Family

A two-goal lead with 30 minutes left went down the drain as Goldey-Beacom was breached for three goals in a crippling 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

Senior Erik Tapper (Linkoping, Sweden) had scored one goal in each of his three previous and he made that four with a tally in the 42nd minute.  After junior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) had his shot blocked, Tapper was there to clean up the rebound for a 1-0 Lightning lead.

Freshman Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) scored what appeared to be an insurance marker in the 57th minute for a 2-0 GBC cushion.  Sophomore Callum Flynn (Guildford, England) sent a cross from the left that Maruca buried for his first collegiate goal.

The Tigers then scored twice in a 24-minute span to forge a 2-2 draw.  Justin Hiltwine in the 60th minute tallied his third goal of the season off a pass from Joe Stewart and Jovan James in the 84th minute scored off Mariano Cepeda's feed.

Holy Family was outshot 24-7 for the contest, but completed the remarkable comeback in the 86th minute.  James converted the brace with his seventh goal of the year, taking a pass from Matthew Tracey and netting his seventh goal of the season.

Maruca, Silvestre and freshman Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) each had four shots with sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) making six saves for the Lightning.

James attempted three shots and Dylan Rutledge came up with six saves for the Tigers (4-9-3, 2-5-3 CACC).

GBC (9-5-1, 6-3-1) finds itself in a three-way tie for second place in the league with Wilmington (6-2-1) and Georgian Court (6-3-1).  Caldwell (5-3-2) is just two points back in fifth with the top four squads hosting a quarterfinal in the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday at Post, starting at approximately 2:30 pm.  The women's game precedes that at noon.
