Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Scores 2-1 Win Over Caldwell; Clinches CACC Tournament Berth

Freshman Markus Poulsen (Birkerod, Denmark) and junior Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany) scored huge goals and Goldey-Beacom's defense made it stand in the squad's 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

A tightly contested first half looked like it would go into the locker room scoreless, but the Lightning had other ideas.  Poulsen got a ball that deflected off a Caldwell defender and put a shot inside the bottom left corner with 31 seconds left for a 1-0 GBC lead.

The Lightning held a 10-3 shots edge in the second half, but still were nursing the one-goal lead when Zvinchuk in the 86th minute turned out the lights.  After getting a pass from Lorenzo Gama (Bali, Indonesia), Zvinchuk rocketed a perfect 25-yard volley shot inside the left post that goalkeeper Fritz Meister had no chance of stopping.

The Cougars got life with 56 seconds remaining when a handball in the box led to Jakub Havlak scoring on a penalty kick.  But the Lightning's defense took over from there for the team's fifth triumph in their last eight meetings with the Cougars.

Junior Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA) attempted three shots and sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made three saves for GBC (9-4-1, 6-2-1 CACC), which remains in second place in the league and clinched its second straight berth in the CACC Tournament.

Meister closed with three saves for Caldwell (5-7-2, 4-3-2), which sits tied for fifth in the conference.

Goldey-Beacom hits the road Wednesday to visit Holy Family for a 3:30 pm match in Philadelphia.
