Women’s Soccer Dealt 4-1 Setback at Mount Olive

Goldey-Beacom could not protect an early lead and ran into a scoring machine for a 4-1 loss at Mount Olive in Mount Olive, NC.

Goldey-Beacom, which owned a 5-3 shots edge in the first half, netted its first goal of the season courtesy of sophomore Kelsey Vick (Clarksboro, NJ) in the 25th minute.  Sophomore Halle Thomas (Mantua, NJ) directed a great pass in the box and Vick was there from 15 yards to bury it for her fourth career goal and a 1-0 Lightning lead.

Mount Olive got two quick goals later in the first half for a 2-1 lead.  The first came courtesy of an own goal in the 38th minute and the second occurred when Malika Connor showed nifty footwork in the box, finding the back of the net in the 42nd minute.

The margin increased to 3-1 in the 64th minute when Maddy Robak dribbled near the box and found Nichole Poppe, who buried one inside the left post.  Poppe was on the spot in the 73rd minute, netting her second goal of the match to make it a 4-1 contest.

Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) attempted three shots and fellow junior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) came up with four saves for the Lightning (0-2).

Poppe recorded four shots and Stephanie McCoy did not make a save for the Trojans (2-0).

Goldey-Beacom has six days to prepare for its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener Saturday at Felician.  The game in Lyndhurst, NJ begins at approximately 8:00 pm, which follows the men's 5:30 pm match.
