Merel Ann van Zanten Highlights Women’s Tennis’ Performance at ITA Regional

Freshman Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) stole the show for Goldey-Beacom, reaching the "B" flight singles final in a tremendous performance at the ITA East Regional Championship in Philadelphia.
 
Van Zanten won five matches over the weekend to reach the final, which included a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foes in the process.  After winning her first three matches, she defeated Hayley Craskey from Chestnut Hill, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and Axe Owens from Chestnut Hill, 6-1, in the semifinals.
 
Her run ended with a tough 8-1 loss to Nicole Downey of Stonehill in the final.
 
The "A" singles flight also was a successful one for the Lightning, who saw four players win a first-round match.
 
Junior Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) got a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Tatiana Rajaona of Molloy before falling 7-5, 6-4 to Melanie Benyadi of New York Tech in the second round.  Junior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over CACC foe Alina Nersesyan of Holy Family before withdrawing prior to her next match.
 
Junior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) got a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) triumph over Amica Benot-Limosani of Le Moyne before a 6-3, 6-4 setback to Alexandra Borgenhoff of New York Tech.  Junior Pauline Rozet (Malakoff, France) recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hannah Riley of Assumption before retiring in her second-round match.
 
The "A" doubles flight saw Mrad and Beg notch an 8-6 win over Benoit-Limoasni and Tiffany Dun of Le Moyne before an 8-6 loss to Sumeera Kamil and Melanie Benyadi of Queens (NY).  Sengl and van Zanten were handed an 8-2 loss in the first round to Lara Scholtze and Iman Williams-Mulesa of Chestnut Hill.
 
Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday at Philadelphia U., starting at 3:30 pm.
