Volleyball Notches Two Victories in its Tri-Match



Goldey-Beacom opened it tri-match with a convincing 3-0 triumph (25-9, 25-13, 25-20) over Cheyney before rallying for a stunning 3-2 win (16-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-9) against Mercy at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning (3-3) had little trouble with the Lady Wolves (0-4), owning a 40-13 kills edge with an impressive .326 hitting percentage.  GBC held a 13-1 kills advantage in the first set to set the tone.
 
Junior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE) had 10 kills, freshman Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) notched 28 assists, eight aces and eight assists with freshman Keelin McEleney (Conshohocken, PA) adding 11 digs for the Lightning.  Four of Florence's aces came on consecutive points in the third set.
 
Akia Harris posted 11 digs and Sabrinia Hill-William added 10 for Cheyney.
 
The last match was far more dramatic as the Lightning posted nine kills and just one error in the final set.  Sophomore Shyanne Shank (Lebanon, PA) had four kills in the finale, sophomore Jada Canteen (Newark, DE) pounded three and McCarthy's kill on the left sideline ended the match.
 
Shank amassed a career-best 16 kills, McCarthy had 15 and 16 digs, Canteen notched 15 kills, Florence had 51 assists and 13 digs, senior Mackenzie Wilson (Wilmington, DE) posted 16 digs and McEleney added 13 digs.
 
Peyton Olson had 13 kills, Brianna Heffernan notched 19 digs and Toni Parente added 11 for the Mavericks (2-5).
 
In the neutral-site match, Mercy cruised to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-15, 25-11) over Cheyney.
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday to face Concordia (NY) in both teams Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener at 7:00 pm.  Please note the date change as this match originally was scheduled for September 26.
