Women’s Tennis Battles Hard in Tough 5-4 Loss to No. 12 California (PA)

A true test was at hand for Goldey-Beacom as it battled against 12th-ranked California (PA), but was dealt a tough 5-4 loss in Brownsville, PA.

Many positives could be taken from the match. Leading the way was the first doubles team of freshmen Laura Moreno (Murcia, Spain) and Julia Gutierrez (Quart, Spain), who posted an 8-5 triumph over Jesse Burrell and Kiefer Shaw. The latter are the ninth ranked doubles team in the country and first in the Atlantic Region for the Vulcans (2-2).

The Lightning (13-3), who are ranked fifth as a team in the East Region, had three singles triumphs. Gutierrez notched a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at fourth singles over Veronika Mikulis, sophomore Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Mariela Sarinana and sophomore Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) had a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 triumph at sixth singles vs. Katie Olson

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Wednesday at Shippensburg, starting at 4:00 pm.
