Volleyball Dealt Another Five-Set Heartbreaker by USciences

Goldey-Beacom and University of the Sciences played another five-set tilt that could have gone either way, but the latter departed the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE with a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory (18-25, 27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12).

After falling into a 20-10 hole in the second set, GBC went on a 17-5 run and saved seven set points for an improbable win.  Senior Innocent Early (Newark, NJ) had four kills during the final run, freshman Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) added two and sophomore Kelly Bolton (Oxford, PA) ended the set with an ace.

Early in the set had seven kills with a .294 hitting percentage and Florence amassed nine assists.

Sophomore Shyanne Shank (Lebanon, PA) in the third set led a charge for the Lightning, who trailed by as many as 14-8.  She had six kills in the set to go with a .455 percentage, helping the home side total 15 kills in the set to equal its total from the second.

GBC held a 17-15 lead in the fourth set, but USciences ended the stanza on a 10-2 run to force a decider.  Desirae Lair in the set had five kills with a .385 percentage with Hannah Boulaiche adding eight assists.

But the Devils not only had the lead throughout most of the fifth set, but posted 11 kills to go with a .526 percentage and only one error.  Lair and Brooke Witmer had four kills apiece and Boulaiche dished nine assists.

Lair was too much with 20 kills, a .450 percentage and just two errors.  Caitlyn Crawford totaled 15 kills, nine digs, three block solos and three block assists, Witmer notched 10 kills, Boulaiche amassed 52 assists, Nicole Rivera had 15 digs and Christine Irrera added 10 for the Devils (7-16, 7-12 CACC).

Lair also had 20 kills in the school's first meeting this season October 7, when the Devils also notched a 3-2 win.

Early matched her career high with 16 kills for the second straight match and freshman Ellie Fleegle (Berlin, PA) had 15 to give her 29 over her last two matches in addition to a .636 percentage for the Lightning (7-19, 2-15).  Florence dished 46 assists, Shank had 10 kills and 12 digs for her first career double-double, Keelin McEleney (Conshohocken, PA) notched 13 digs and fellow freshman Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 11.
