WILMINGTON, Del. - Led by 16 points from senior forward
Justin Turner (Trumbull H.S./Trumbull, Conn.), Dominican College (17-8, 13-5) took advantage of a poor shooting effort from Goldey-Beacom College (10-15, 8-10) and handed the Lightning a 67-52 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers remain in second place in the CACC North Division standings after earning their fourth win in the last five games. Meanwhile, the Lightning fell into a tie for fourth place in the CACC South Division with Chestnut Hill after losing for the fourth time in the last five games.
After battling to a 12-12 tie in the first 10 minutes of the first half, the Chargers scored nine consecutive points, including seven points from junior guard
A.J. Burton (New Rochelle H.S./New Rochelle, N.Y.), to take a 21-12 lead with 7:24 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Lightning narrowed the margin to 21-16 with 6:43 remaining in the half, but the Chargers scored 10 of the final 14 points to take a 31-20 advantage into the intermission.
In the second half, the Chargers continued to increase the advantage and led by as many as 18 points with 2:05 remaining en route to earning the win.
Turner, who led all scorers with his 16-point effort, made four of eight shots from the floor and shot 8-for-10 from the free throw line. He also added six rebounds for the Chargers, who shot 36.5 per cent from the field.
Burton came off the bench to contribute 15 points with six rebounds, making 5 of 12 field goal attempts along with a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line.
