WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior forward
Garret Kerr scored a game-high 31 points, including 17 in the first half, and added 11 rebounds as the University of the Sciences (10-7, 6-4) ended a three-game losing streak by earning an 81-76 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (6-10, 4-6) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Thursday evening.
The reigning CACC Player of the Year, Kerr made 14 of 23 shots from the floor and also converted three of six free throws en route to earning his 13
th "double double" of the season. In addition, he tallied 30 or more points for the third time this year.
The Devils, who never trailed in the game, shot an impressive 63.0 per cent from the field in the first half while building a 43-36 advantage. Kerr made 8 of 10 field goal attempts in the first half as the Devils led by as many as 15 points in the opening stanza.
Meanwhile, the Lightning were able to trim the deficit to 77-75 with 58 seconds left on a jumper by freshman guard
Donte McGill, but the Devils made four free throws in the final 12 seconds to secure the victory.
While Garret Kerr led the Devils with 31 points, sophomore
Wes Kerr added 15 points by making all three field goal attempts in addition to all eight of his free throws.
McGill, the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, tallied 20 points in a losing effort for the Lightning by making 8 of 10 shots from the floor in addition to three of four free throws.
Freshman guard
Parris Ridgeway-Higgs added a season-high 18 points for Goldey-Beacom, which lost for the fourth time in the last five games.
The Lightning will travel to Felician College on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a 3 p.m. CACC match-up against the Golden Falcons.
