PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior guard
Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.) scored the game-winning lay-up as time expired to lead Chestnut Hill College (6-10, 4-5) to its fifth win in the last seven games, a 58-56 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (6-9, 4-5) at Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday evening.
In a game that featured four ties and five lead changes, Walck gave the Griffins the victory when he converted a lay-up off an assist from sophomore guard
Dexter Harris (Bishop Eustace H.S./Swedesboro, N.J.). Harris set up the play by recording a steal after Goldey-Beacom had called timeout with two seconds remaining.
After the teams battled to a 9-9 tie in the opening eight minutes of the first half, the Lightning put together a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to build a commanding 23-11 advantage with 6:59 left in the period.
The Griffins closed the gap to two points by scoring 14 of the next 18 points to trail by 27-25 with 2:46 left in the first half on a jumper by freshman guard
Billy Cassidy (Friends' Central H.S./Primos, Pa.).
However, the Lightning used three points from freshman guard
Donte McGill (Mont Clare Academy/Newark, Del.) to take a 30-27 edge into the intermission.
The Lightning opened the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points, upping their lead to 37-29 with 15:24 remaining on a lay-up by freshman guard
Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.).
But, a 13-4 run over the next six minutes gave the Griffins a brief 42-41 advantage with 9:42 remaining.
The Lightning used a traditional three-point play from junior forward
Derrick Archie (Christiana H.S./Wilmington, Del.) to regain the Goldey-Beacom lead at 44-42 before the Griffins answered with a 10-2 run to take a 52-46 lead with 4:58 left.
Trailing by the six-point deficit, the Lightning put together an 8-2 spurt, including six points from McGill, to tie the game at 54-54 with 2:03 remaining.
The teams traded lay-ups in a 20-second span to set up the game-winning heroics by Walck.
Walck led the Griffins to the victory by scoring 14 points with eight rebounds while graduate student guard
Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) tallied 11 points with a team-high 11 rebounds for his first "double double" of the season.
McGill scored a game-high 24 points for the Lightning, who suffered their sixth loss in the last eight games. He made 7 of 14 shots from the floor and converted 9 of 10 free throws.
The Lightning will be idle until Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they host the University of the Sciences in a CACC contest at 8 p.m.
