Lightning Use Second Half Run to Defeat Wildcats

WILMINGTON, Del. - Freshman guard Donte McGill (Mont Clare Academy/Newark, Del.) scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the second half as Goldey-Beacom College (6-8, 4-4) overcame a four-point deficit at the intermission to earn a 58-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Wilmington University (6-10, 2-5) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.

The win allowed the Lightning to end their three-game homestand with a 2-1 record while handing the Wildcats their second loss in a row.

Trailing by a 38-34 margin with 14:01 remaining in the second half, the Wildcats put together a 9-0 run, including seven points from freshman guard Drew Johnson (Hempfield H.S./Lancaster, Pa.), to take a 43-38 lead with 11:05 left in regulation.

However, the Lightning scored 12 consecutive points over the next 3:50 to take a 50-43 advantage with 7:15 left on a three-point field goal by junior guard Jarrel Lane (St. Patrick H.S./Rahway, N.J.).

After the Wildcats narrowed the margin to 52-49 on a traditional three-point play by sophomore forward Ta'Vaune Griffin (Chester H.S./Chester, Pa.) with 2:14 remainign, the Lightning scored six of the final nine points to hold on for the victory.

There were three ties and five lead changes in the first half before the Wildcats used back-to-back field goals in the final 43 seconds of the opening stanza to take a 30-26 advantage into the intermission.

While McGill led the Lightning to the victory, Williams matched his season high by contributing 14 points off the bench in addition to grabbing seven rebounds. Meanwhile, junior forward Derrick Archie (Christiana H.S./Wilmington, Del.) tallied eight points with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Griffin led the Wildcats in the loss by scoring 11 points with six rebounds while sophomore Shai Henry (Middle Township H.S./Cape May Court House, N.J.) added 10 points with six rebounds.

The Lightning will travel to Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to face the Griffins in the second meeting between the teams this season. The Griffins edged Goldey-Beacom by 56-53 in the first meeting at the Jones Center on Dec. 18.
