OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Jaime Gomez Bardon (Madrid, Spain) scored three goals as the New York Institute of Technology (6-2-0) erupted for a season-high nine goals to defeat Goldey-Beacom College (2-7-0) by a 9-1 margin in a non-conference match played at President's Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Bears, who have won three of their last four matches, tallied seven of their nine goals in the first half as they built a 7-0 lead en route to the win. Meanwhile, the loss snapped the Lightning's two-match win streak.
Sophomore defender
Gonzalo Barroso (Madrid, Spain) gave the Bears a very quick 1-0 lead in the third minute when he scored his first goal of the season off an assist from senior defender
Matthieu Jean-Baptiste (Paris, France).
With 20:08 left in the opening stanza, senior forward
Matthew DiDonna (West Islip H.S./West Islip, N.Y.) upped the advantage to 2-0 with his second goal of the season.
Led by a goal from Gomez Bardon, the Bears added three goals in a six-minute span to extend the advantage to 5-0 before Gomez Bardon scored back-to-back markers for a 7-0 advantage at the intermission.
Junior forward
Luiz Ristow (Joinville, Brazil) ended the Bears' shutout bid in the 59th minute when he scored his third goal of the season with an unassisted marker on a breakaway.
But, the Bears answered with two insurance goals in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.
While Gomez Bardon led the Bears to the win, DiDonna added two goals and two assists for NYIT, which held a commanding 20-7 shot advantage.
Senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela) made four saves in a losing effort for the Lightning.
The Lightning, who are in the middle of playing four matches in seven days, will return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Georgian Court University for the first meeting with the Lions. Opening kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
