Updating the Lightning
Now 6-15 overall and 3-10 in the CACC, the Lightning suffered their eighth loss in the last nine games with a tough 84-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setback against Felician College on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Center. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter led the Lightning with his sixth “double double” of the season by scoring 20 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin and junior guard A.J. Picard each added 15 points in a losing effort. The Lightning, who have lost four straight home games, are led by Porter, who is averaging 16.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Meanwhile, senior forward Lawrence Livingston has tallied 40 blocks for the Lightning, which ranks second in the CACC.
Scouting Lincoln
Currently 12-8 on the season, the Lions will bring a brief two-game win streak into Wednesday's clash with the Lightning after a 64-55 victory over Virginia State on Saturday evening. Junior guard Derrick Washington led the Lions by scoring a game-high 23 points while connecting on 7 of 10 field goal attempts, including a three-for-five effort from three-point range, and six of eight free throws. Meanwhile, senior guard Kenny Sharpe contributed 17 points with five rebounds as the Lions led by as many as 13 points in the second half. The Lions, who have posted an 8-3 record away from home this season, are led by Sharpe, who is averaging 15.9 points per game while posting a team-high 46 assists. Meanwhile, junior guard George Jackson is averaging 13.3 points per game. Lincoln Coach John Hill, who is in his third season as the Lions' leader, was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Week on Monday for the fourth time this season.
A Look at Last Year's Meeting
Led by a game-high 26 points from Denzel Mooney, Lincoln University overcame a six-point half-time deficit to defeat the Lightning by an 84-78 margin in a non-conference game at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium. Mooney, who was one of two Lincoln players to score 20 points in the victory, converted just 7 of 15 shots from the floor, including a two-for-three effort from three-point range, but made 10 of 13 free throws while adding six rebounds. Meanwhile, junior guard George Jackson added 24 points by connecting on 6 of 13 shots from the floor and 10 of 11 free throws. Junior guard A.J. Picard led the Lightning with a team-high 23 points in a losing effort, making 8 of 17 shots from the floor and all three of his free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter barely missed a “double double” by scoring 20 points with nine rebounds. The Lions forced Goldey-Beacom to commit 20 turnovers en route to the victory.
Porter Recognized as Honorable Mention Selection for CACC Weekly Awards
After leading the Lightning to a split of their two games last week, sophomore guard Marcus Porter was named as an honorable mention selection for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference weekly awards on Monday afternoon by the CACC. Porter, who is the Lightning's leading scorer, averaged 20.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game last week. He scored 20 points, including the game-winning field goal in the closing seconds of overtime, in Goldey-Beacom's win over the University of the Sciences before posting his sixth “double double” of the season with 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds against Felician on Saturday afternoon. It is the second time this season Porter has earned honorable mention notice by the CACC.
Livingston Sets Goldey-Beacom Career and Single-Season Blocks Records
Senior forward Lawrence Livingston has rewritten the Goldey-Beacom men's basketball single-season and career blocks record during his final year in a Lightning uniform. Entering Wednesday's game against Lincoln, the Dover, Del. native has posted 103 blocks in his career, surpassing the previous school record of 98 that was set by Derek Savage from 2004-08. In addition, he broke Savage's single-season record on Feb. 2 against Felician with three blocks, upping his season total to 40 blocks. Livingston ranks second in the CACC this season and 21st in NCAA Division II through games of Feb. 3.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will begin a two-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they visit Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game against the Warriors at 3 p.m. It will be the second game of a CACC doubleheader as the Lightning women's team faces the Warriors at 1 p.m. The Lightning posted a 101-72 victory over the Warriors in last year's meeting at the Joseph West Jones College Center as A.J. Picard led three players who recorded a “double double” in the win. Picard tallied 20 points with 10 rebounds.
