Opening Tip-Off
Hoping to end the season on a winning note, the Lightning will finish their quick two-game homestand by welcoming Holy Family University to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon for the regular season finale for both teams. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Tigers is slated for approximately 3 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game that starts at 1 p.m. In addition, prior to the start of the game, the Lightning will honor their senior class in a special ceremony. Updating the Lightning
Now 8-17 overall and 4-12 in the CACC, the Lightning have dropped two straight games after suffering a tough 77-66 setback against Philadelphia University in a CACC South Division match-up on Tuesday night at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Junior guard A.J. Picard led the Lightning with 25 points after making 10 of 11 shots from the floor, but Goldey-Beacom was unable to stop Philadelphia University freshman Peter Alexis, who scored a game-high 33 points while grabbing a season-high 20 rebounds. Sophomore forward Marcus Porter added 15 points with six rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 45.6 per cent from the field. Porter is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.5 average while grabbing 7.4 rebounds per contest. Meanwhile, Picard leads the Lightning with 65 assists while contributing 15.6 points per game.
Scouting Holy Family
Currently 16-9 overall and 12-4 in the CACC, the Tigers will bring a four-game win streak into Saturday's match-up against the Lightning after earning a 67-49 victory over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday night at the Campus Center. Senior Angel Ayala led the Tigers to the win by posting his third “double double” of the season with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, junior Alberto Munoz posted his first “double double” of the year after scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds. Ervin Ezell is the Tigers' leading scorer with a 16.7 average and also has a team-high 116 assists. Meanwhile, Munoz is contributing 15.7 points per contest while making 81 of 234 three-point field goal attempts in 25 games.
Series Business: Holy Family
The Lightning and the Tigers will be meeting for the 26th time in a series that Holy Family leads by a 16-9 margin when the two teams square off on Saturday afternoon. However, Holy Family has won three of the last four affairs with Goldey-Beacom after the Lightning won three straight contests. Of the Lightning's nine wins in the series, seven of them have been earned on their home floor, including three of the last four triumphs.
A Look at This Year's Earlier Meeting
Junior guard Alberto Munoz scored a career-high 29 points, including 14 in the first half, to lead Holy Family to its third win in the last four games, an 83-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College at the Tigers' Campus Center. Led by Munoz, the Tigers shot a season-high 50.0 per cent from the field, including a 10-for-22 effort from three-point range, en route to the victory over their CACC South Division rivals. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter came off the bench to lead the Lightning with 17 points while sophomore guard Charles Jackson added 16 points with a career-high seven steals.
Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• After dropping seven straight games from Dec. 19 to Jan. 26, the Lightning have won three of their last five games. They have also scored at least 75 points in four of the five games, including 86 points in the overtime win against Lincoln on Feb. 6.
• The Lightning's eight wins this season are the fewest since they had six wins in 2004-05. The Lightning will also have a losing record to end a season for the first time since 2008-09 when they ended the year with a 14-15 record.
• Of the Lightning's eight wins this season, four of them have come at home. In addition, the win over Lincoln snapped a four-game home losing streak.
• After edging Lincoln by an 86-83 margin on Feb. 6, the Lightning improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season. In addition, the Lightning have now won six straight overtime games, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
• The Lightning enter Tuesday's game ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.1 blocked shots per game. They have recorded 35 blocked shots in the last nine games, but were limited to just two blocks in Tuesday's loss against the Rams.
• Sophomore guard Marcus Porter became the second Goldey-Beacom player to score 30 points in a game this season with his 30-point effort against Lincoln on Feb. 6. On Jan. 15, junior guard A.J. Picard recorded a career-high 38 points in a 105-99 loss against Chestnut Hill.
• Porter had a streak of 23 consecutive games with at least 10 points snapped last Saturday afternoon when he was limited to just nine points against Dominican. It marked the first time he failed to score in double figures since last year's CACC semifinal against Dominican when he had just eight points.
• Picard has scored in double figures in 15 of his last 16 games, including six consecutive games. Over the last six games, the Skippack, Pa. native is averaging 19.3 points per game, including a pair of 20-point performances.
• In addition, Picard enters Saturday's game ranked 11th in school history with 880 career points. He needs 20 points to become the 11th player in school history with 900 or more career points.
Livingston Sets Goldey-Beacom Career and Single-Season Blocks Records
Senior forward Lawrence Livingston has rewritten the Goldey-Beacom men's basketball single-season and career blocks record during his final year in a Lightning uniform. Entering the regular season finale against Holy Family, the Dover, Del. native has posted 111 blocks in his career, surpassing the previous school record of 98 that was set by Derek Savage from 2004-08. In addition, he broke Savage's single-season record on Feb. 2 against Felician with three blocks and now has 48 blocks in 24 games this year. Livingston ranks second in the CACC this season and 21st in NCAA Division II through games of Feb. 17.
