Opening Tip-Off
Opening a quick two-game homestand to end the season, the Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday night to host Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division match-up. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Rams is slated for approximately 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game between the two schools. In addition, live stats and live video will be available on the Lightning's official athletics website, www.gbcathletics.com.
Updating the Lightning
Now 8-16 overall and 4-11 in the CACC, the Lightning had a two-game win streak snapped with an 89-69 CACC setback against North Division rival Dominican on Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center. The loss also eliminated the Lightning from consideration for a berth in the CACC Tournament. Junior guard A.J. Picard led the Lightning in a losing effort with 17 points after making 8 of 13 field goal attempts along with seven rebounds while senior forward Lawrence Livingston matched his season high by scoring 13 points. However, sophomore guard Marcus Porter was held to just nine points, marking the first time this year he failed to score 10 points in a game. Porter is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.6 average while Picard is contributing 15.3 points per contest.
Scouting Philadelphia University
Currently 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the CACC, the Rams are in second place in the South Division standings behind Holy Family and have clinched a berth in the CACC Tournament. The Rams had their two-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a tough 81-80 overtime setback against Concordia. It was their second straight overtime contest in three days after winning a 98-95 contest in triple overtime against Dominican on Thursday night. Freshman forward Peter Alexis earned CACC Rookie of the Week honors on Monday after scoring a season-high 35 points in the loss against Concordia on Saturday. He also contributed 13 points with nine rebounds in the win against Dominican. Senior guard Jim Connolly and freshman guard Andre Gibbs are tied for the Rams' scoring lead by averaging 14.6 points per game while Alexis is contributing 13.9 points per contest with a team-high 8.2 rebounds per outing.
Series Business: Philadelphia University
The Lightning and the Rams will be playing for the 17th time in a series that Philadelphia University leads by a 10-6 margin. It will be the second meeting this season between the two teams as the Rams snapped a three-game losing streak against the Lightning with a 74-53 victory at the Gallagher Center on Jan. 23. Despite the loss, the Lightning have won four of the last seven meetings with their CACC South Division rivals. The Lightning have a 5-2 all-time record at home against the Rams.
A Look at This Year's Earlier Meeting
Led by a game-high 23 points from senior guard Jim Connolly, the Rams earned their third straight win with a 74-53 CACC victory over the Lightning at the Gallagher Center on Jan. 23. The win allowed the Rams to snap a three-game losing streak against the Lightning. Connolly made 6 of 12 shots from the floor, including a four-for-eight performance from three-point range, en route to his third 20-point game of the season. Meanwhile, freshman forward Peter Alexis contributed 17 points with a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter led the Lightning in a losing effort by scoring 14 points with six rebounds while junior guard A.J. Picard and sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin each chipped in 11 points.
Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• After dropping seven straight games from Dec. 19 to Jan. 26, the Lightning have won three of their last five games. They have also scored at least 75 points in four of the five games, including 86 points in the overtime win against Lincoln on Feb. 6.
• Of the Lightning's eight wins this season, four of them have come at home. In addition, the win over Lincoln snapped a four-game home losing streak.
• After edging Lincoln by an 86-83 margin on Feb. 6, the Lightning improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season. In addition, the Lightning have now won six straight overtime games, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
• The Lightning enter Tuesday's game ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.2 blocked shots per game. They have recorded 33 blocked shots in the last eight games after posting six blocks in each of their last two games.
• Sophomore guard Marcus Porter became the second Goldey-Beacom player to score 30 points in a game this season with his 30-point effort against Lincoln on Feb. 6. On Jan. 15, junior guard A.J. Picard recorded a career-high 38 points in a 105-99 loss against Chestnut Hill.
• Porter had a streak of 23 consecutive games with at least 10 points snapped on Saturday afternoon when he was limited to just nine points against Dominican. It marked the first time he failed to score in double figures since last year's CACC semifinal against Dominican when he had just eight points.
• After averaging just 1.7 points per game in his first seven games this season, sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin has averaged 11.4 points per game in his last eight outings. He has also scored 10 or more points in six of those eight contests, but was held to just nine points on Saturday against Dominican.
• Picard has scored in double figures in 14 of his last 15 games, including five consecutive games. Over the last five games, the Skippack, Pa. native is averaging 18.2 points per game.
• In addition, Picard enters Tuesday's game ranked 11th in school history with 855 career points.
Livingston Sets Goldey-Beacom Career and Single-Season Blocks Records
Senior forward Lawrence Livingston has rewritten the Goldey-Beacom men's basketball single-season and career blocks record during his final year in a Lightning uniform. Entering Tuesday's game against Philadelphia University, the Dover, Del. native has posted 109 blocks in his career, surpassing the previous school record of 98 that was set by Derek Savage from 2004-08. In addition, he broke Savage's single-season record on Feb. 2 against Felician with three blocks and now has 46 blocks in 23 games this year. Livingston ranks second in the CACC this season and 21st in NCAA Division II through games of Feb. 14.
30 Something for Porter
Sophomore guard Marcus Porter recorded the second 30-point game of his college career in the Lightning's 86-83 victory over Lincoln on Feb. 6 at the Joseph West Jones College Center. He also had a career-high 32 points in the Lightning's win over Dominican last year at the Jones Center. Porter, who is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 16.6 average, has tallied 20 or more points five times this year, including three of his last five games. He has also moved into 12th place on the Lightning's all-time scoring list with 849 career points.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will finish their season at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon when they face Holy Family in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division match-up at approximately 3 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game. Prior to the opening tip-off, the Lightning will honor senior forward Lawrence Livingston on the occasion of his final career game. The Tigers won the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 12 with an 83-70 triumph at the Campus Center.
