Lightning Use Balanced Attack to Earn Third Straight Win

WILMINGTON, Del. – Playing for the first time in 11 days, the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team used a strong performance in the second half to extend its win streak to three straight games with a 92-79 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia College at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.  

Now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the CACC, the Lightning had six players score in double figures en route to a season-high 92 points. Meanwhile, the Clippers fall to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in the CACC.

Trailing by a 47-40 margin with 19:05 remaining in the second half, the Lightning put together a 15-0 run to take a 55-47 lead on a three-point field goal by junior guard Jarrel Lane (St. Patrick H.S./Rahway, N.J.) with 14:09 left. Freshman guard Donte McGill (Mont Clare Academy/Newark, Del.) and junior center Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill West H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) each scored five points during the run.

After the Clippers scored seven straight points to trim the deficit to 55-54 with 11:36 remaining, the Lightning used a 6-0 spurt to extend the lead to 61-54 with 8:37 left in regulation.

From there, the Lightning continued to build their advantage and led by as many as 19 points with 1:12 left when McGill converted a free throw to complete a three-point play.

The Lightning jumped out to an early 8-7 lead in the opening four minutes of the first half before the Clippers answered by scoring 9 of the next 11 points to claim a 16-10 edge with 13:02 left on a jumper by senior guard Douglas Soutar (Windsor H.S./Hartford, Conn.).

Over the next 13 minutes, there were five ties before the Clippers scored 7 of the final 11 points to end the first half with a three-point advantage.

En route to scoring a season-high 19 points, McGill made 6 of 11 shots from the floor and seven of eight free throws. He also added two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Meanwhile, Gebhart tallied 17 points with eight rebounds. Freshman guard Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.) added 14 points with six assists.

Sophomore guard Jamie Holder (Notre Dame Prep/Milford, N.H.) led Concordia in a losing effort by scoring a game-high 21 points. He made 8 of 15 field goal attempts and also converted five of six free throw attempts.

The Lightning will be idle until Saturday, Dec. 14 when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 3 p.m. CACC South Division game against the Rams. It will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Meanwhile, the Clippers will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 18 when they visit Caldwell for a CACC North Division contest at 8 p.m.

Game Notes:
- The win allowed the Lightning to avenge an 87-81 loss against the Clippers last year.
- Over the last three games, the Lightning have made 56 of 73 free throw attempts (.767). They had a season-high 24 made free throws and 29 free throw attempts on Saturday.
- The 92 points by Goldey-Beacom are the most in a game since the Lightning tallied 99 points in a loss against Chestnut Hill on Jan. 15.
- The Lightning allowed a season-high 79 points on Saturday afternoon.
- Concordia has scored 75 or more points four times this season.
