Men's Basketball Ends Calendar Year With 77-61 Loss at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Junior guard Wali Hepburn (Neumann-Goretti H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) made 12 of 15 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 29 points as Lock Haven University (6-4) used a strong shooting effort to earn its second straight win, a 77-61 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (4-7) at the Eagles' Thomas Fieldhouse on Tuesday afternoon.

Led by Hepburn, the Eagles shot a blistering 50.0 per cent from the field and converted five of eight three-point field goal attempts. It marked the third consecutive game Lock Haven has made at least 50.0 per cent of its field goal attempts.

The Lightning jumped out to an early 14-8 lead in the first six minutes as junior center Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill West H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored six points to ignite the run.

After Goldey-Beacom increased its advantage to 20-12 on a lay-up by freshman guard Donte McGill (Mont Clare Academy/Newark, Del.) with 9:26 remaining, the Eagles used a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to claim a 24-22 edge on a pair of free throws by senior forward Kasheef Festus (Archbishop Carroll H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.).

A three-point field goal from McGill regained a one-point lead for the Lightning before Lock Haven tallied 15 of the next 23 points for a 39-33 advantage at the intermission.

Hepburn scored 13 consecutive points to open the second half, upping the Eagles' lead to 52-33 with 16:04 remaining. The Lightning closed the gap to 56-46 by going on a 13-4 spurt over the next seven minutes, but they were unable to get any closer as the Eagles held on for the victory.

While scoring his game-high 29 points, Hepburn also contributed six rebounds and three steals. Meanwhile, Festus added 23 points after making 6 of 12 shots from the floor along with 11 of 12 free throws. He also tallied eight rebounds with a steal.

McGill led the Lightning by scoring 17 points off the bench after making 5 of 13 shots from the floor along with all six of his free throw attempts. Gebhart also scored 12 points in the loss while grabbing six rebounds with two blocked shots.

The Lightning, who have lost four games in a row, will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they host Nyack College at the Jones Center at 3 p.m.

• The Lightning held a 28-10 advantage in bench points over the Eagles.
• Hepburn tallied his fifth 20-point game of the season. He scored a season-high 31 points in a 102-87 victory over East Stroudsburg on Dec. 2.
• Junior guard Chris Thompson (Life Center Academy/Florence, N.J.) had a season-high four steals for Goldey-Beacom.
• The Eagles attempted just eight three-point field goal attempts on Tuesday, tying a season low.
• The Lightning tallied a season-high 11 steals on Tuesday.
