AMHERST, N.Y. - Junior forward
Gerald Beverly (Gates Chili H.S./Rochester, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points and added 14 rebounds to lead Daemen College (2-0) to its second win in a row, a 59-56 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (1-1) at the Knee Center of Western New York Tip-Off Classic at Lumsden Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Beverly, who was named as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, made 6 of 14 field goal attempts and converted six of nine free throws to lead the Wildcats to the victory.
Led by nine points from junior guard
Kyle Steinbergin (Teaneck H.S./Englewood, N.J.), the Lightning jumped out to a 31-27 lead in the first half. The Lightning overcame a 9-2 deficit in the first four minutes to lead by as many as seven points with 8:18 remaining in the period on a three-point field goal by junior guard
Jarrel Lane (St. Patrick H.S./Rahway, N.J.).
But, the Wildcats rallied in the first six minutes of the second half by scoring 9 of the first 12 points to take a 36-34 advantage on a tip-in by senior forward
Uchechi Ogbonna (Westbury, N.Y.).
From there, the Wildcats built their lead to as many as 10 points before the Lightning closed the gap to 57-56 with 1:29 remaining on a Lane lay-up. However, junior guard
Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda H.S./North Tonawanda, N.Y.) secured the victory with a lay-up with 55 seconds remaining.
In addition to Beverly's "double double" effort, Ogbonna added a "double double" with 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Junior forward
Jordan Greene (South Glens Falls H.S./Fort Edward, N.Y.) added 18 points after making 6 of 15 field goal attempts, including a two-for-six effort from three-point range, with four rebounds and two assists.
Junior center
Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill West H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the Lightning in the loss by scoring 13 points with eight rebounds while Steinbergin contributed 13 points. Lane scored seven points with six rebounds and six assists.
The Lightning will finish their season-opening three-game road trip on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when they open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule at the University of the Sciences at 8 p.m.
