SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior guard
Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) made 6 of 17 shots from the floor and matched her season high with 18 points as Goldey-Beacom College (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak by earning a 72-61 victory over Shippensburg University (1-1) at the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic at Heiges Field House on Friday evening.
Led by four points from senior forward
Briana Richmond-Peters (Brimm Medical Arts H.S./Camden, N.J.), the Lightning sprinted out to an 8-0 lead in the first 2:41 of the opening stanza. But, the Raiders answered by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to take a 13-10 advantage on a lay-up by sophomore guard
Caitlyn Deeter (North Schuylkill H.S./Ringtown, Pa.) with 10:51 remaining.
The Lightning battled back to regain the lead and took a 37-23 advantage into the intermission after 10 of the final 12 points to end the first half.
Chukwueze scored 11 of her 18 points in the second half as the Lightning continued to hold a double-digit lead for a remainder of the final 20 minutes.
Led by Chukwueze, the Lightning had four players score at least 10 points in the victory. Richmond-Peters and junior guard
Taylor Leonard (John A. Coleman Catholic H.S./Lake Katrine, N.Y.) each added 10 points while junior guard
Dakia Manning (Freire Charter H.S./East Lansdowne, Pa.) came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points.
Senior guard
Sarah Strybuc (Archbishop Ryan H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Shippensburg in the loss, making 9 of 17 field goal attempts while adding five assists. Freshman forward
Morgan Griffith (Hollidaysburg Area H.S./Hollidaysburg, Pa.) posted a "double double" with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Deeter scored 11 points.
The Lightning, who are in the middle of a seven-game road trip to open the season, will face Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
