OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Freshman
Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Totana, Spain) extended her singles win streak to three straight matches, but it was not enough as the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team suffered its second consecutive loss, an 8-1 non-conference defeat at the New York Institute of Technology at the NYIT Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The win allowed the Bears to remain unbeaten with a perfect 12-0 record this season while the Lightning have lost three of their last five matches.
Victoria Martinez, who earned all-tournament team honors at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship last weekend, earned a tough three-set victory over junior
Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain). After winning the first set by a 6-4 margin, Victoria Martinez dropped the second set by a 6-0 count. However, she rebounded to take a 10-8 victory in the deciding set to claim the victory.
The Lightning will resume their 2013-14 schedule in March.
