PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) hit the game-winning jumper in the closing seconds of overtime as Goldey-Beacom College (6-14, 3-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak by edging the University of the Sciences (8-11, 6-6) in overtime by a 76-74 margin in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Bobby Morgan Arena on Tuesday evening.
The win capped an exciting comeback for the Lightning, who trailed by 12 points with 3:16 remaining in regulation. In addition, it marked the first victory for Goldey-Beacom since a 70-69 triumph over Washington Adventist on Dec. 16.
Porter, who scored 20 points in the victory, gave Goldey-Beacom a two-point lead when he made a 12-foot jumper with 1.3 seconds left after the Lightning took a timeout with 18 seconds remaining in overtime. After the Devils took a timeout, they had a chance to tie the game, but senior
Henry Messinger (Dallas Area H.S./Trucksville, Pa.) missed a jumper as time expired.
The Devils scored six of the first eight points in the first 2:06 of overtime to take a 71-67 lead on a free throw by junior
Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.). But, the Lightning answered with five straight points, including a three-point field goal from freshman guard
Akil Charles (Eleanor Roosevelt H.S./Glendale, Md.), for a 72-71 advantage with 1:45 left.
After a three-point field goal from junior
William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) regained the Devils' edge at 74-72 with 1:05 remaining, redshirt freshman forward
Julian Wright (Archbishop Stepinac H.S./Mount Vernon, N.Y.) tied the game at 74-74 with a lay-up before Porter provided the heroics.
Led by six points from sophomore forward
Garret Kerr (Middle Township H.S./Moorestown, N.J.), the Devils jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the opening nine minutes of the game.
After USciences extended the advantage to 20-12 with 9:36 remaining, the Lightning answered by ending the first half on a 15-5 run to take a 27-25 lead with 28 seconds left in the first half on a pair of free throws by Porter.
But, the Devils opened the second half by going on a 23-9 run to take a 48-36 lead with 9:21 remaining in regulation. USciences maintained its lead for a majority of the second half, increasing the margin to 60-48 with 3:16 left on a pair of Messinger free throws.
However, the Lightning began to put a comeback together by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to close within 62-59 with 1:43 left on a Wright lay-up.
Kerr converted a traditional three-point play with 1:11 left in regulation to increase the margin to 65-59. After Porter hit a jumper with 1:03 remaining, sophomore guard
Kyle Steinbergin (Teaneck H.S./Englewood, N.J.) narrowed the deficit to 65-63 with a jumper with 40 seconds left.
The Lightning forced Kerr to commit a turnover with seven seconds remaining before Charles sent the game into overtime with a lay-up with one second left, marking the fifth tie of the game.
While Porter led the Lightning to the victory, junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) scored a team-high 22 points and contributed eight rebounds. He made 5 of 12 shots from the floor and connected on 10 of 13 free throws.
Meanwhile, Charles came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points while making 5 of 11 field goal attempts.
Kerr, who played all 45 minutes in the loss for the Devils, scored a game-high 32 points and contributed 12 rebounds for his NCAA-leading 13th “double double” of the season. The leading scorer in the CACC, he made 12 of 20 shots from the floor and was perfect in seven attempts at the free throw line.
Kernan added 10 points with five rebounds and four assists for the Devils, who suffered their third loss in the last four games.
The Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday, Feb. 2 to host Felician in the second game of a CACC doubleheader at approximately 3 p.m.
