WILMINGTON, Del. – Sophomore guard Luke Dickson (Pitman H.S./Pitman, N.J.) came off the bench to score a season-high 17 points as Chestnut Hill College (8-8, 4-3) exploded for a season-high 105 points en route to its third win in the last four games, a 105-99 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (5-12, 2-7) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.

Dickson, who was one of seven Chestnut Hill players to score in double figures, scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half as the Griffins jumped out to a 58-38 lead in the first half and held off a late rally by the Lightning.

Led by seven points from Dickson and six points from freshman forward Noel Hightower (Woodbury H.S./Woodbury, N.J.), the Griffins sprinted out to a 27-11 lead in the opening nine minutes. But, the Lightning answered by scoring six of the next eight points to narrow the margin to 29-17 with 10:14 left in the first half on a jumper from senior forward Lawrence Livingston (Caesar Rodney H.S./Dover, Del.).

After the Lightning trimmed the deficit to 33-23, the Griffins scored 10 of the next 11 points to expand their lead to 43-24 on a Dickson three-point field goal with 6:16 remaining. But, an 11-4 spurt by the Lightning cut the margin to 49-38 before a nine-point run by the Griffins upped their advantage to 58-38 at the intermission.

The Griffins upped their lead to 74-50 in the opening five minutes of the second half before the Lightning put together an 18-4 surge, including a pair of three-point field goals from junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.), to close within 78-68 with 8:53 left in regulation.

Chestnut Hill extended its cushion to 90-73 by scoring 12 of the next 17 points before Goldey-Beacom started its comeback bid by going on a 12-0 run, including a pair of three-point field goals from sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin (Teaneck H.S./Englewood, N.J.), to move within 90-85 with 3:48 remaining in regulation.

After back-to-back lay-ups from junior guard Jakeem Bogans (Cardinal Dougherty H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) regained a nine-point advantage for the Griffins, the Lightning countered by scoring seven of the next nine points to pull within 96-92 with 50 seconds remaining on a transition slam dunk by sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.).

But, the Griffins secured the victory by making 9 of 10 free throws in the final minute.

While Dickson led the Griffins to the victory, Hightower recorded the first “double double” of his college career with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, senior guard Mark DiRugeris, Jr. (Woodbury H.S./Woodbury, N.J.) contributed 16 points with six assists and five rebounds.

Picard scored a career-high 38 points in a losing effort for the Lightning and finished just one point shy of the Goldey-Beacom single-game record set by Robert Black on Jan. 31, 2004. In scoring the most points by a player in the CACC this season, Picard made 10 of 21 shots from the floor, including a 5-for-11 effort from three-point range, in addition to converting 13 of 14 free throws. He also added a season-high eight rebounds for the Lightning, who held a 47-39 rebounding edge against Chestnut Hill.

Porter, who returned to the starting lineup, posted his fifth “double double” in the last seven games by scoring 18 points with a game-high 12 rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

Steinbergin, who had entered Tuesday's game with 18 career points, matched his career total by making 5 of 13 shots from the floor, including a 4-for-10 performance from beyond the arc, and four of five free throws.

The Lightning, who have lost five straight games, will be idle until Wednesday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Philadelphia University for a CACC game against the Rams at the Gallagher Center. Opening tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
